The Woodlands BRCA2 Patient has DIEP Flap Breast Reconstruction after Mastectomy

This woman in her 40's had multiple family members with breast cancer prompting her to undergo genetic testing. This confirmed an inherited mutation in the BRCA2 gene, which increases her lifetime risk of breast and ovarian cancers. The patient decided to undergo skin-sparing mastectomies to reduce her cancer risk. She was unhappy with her deflated, sagging breast appearance and desired reconstruction with a goal of fuller, lifted breasts. Her excess lower abdominal fat and sagging skin were repurposed using the DIEP flap procedure to rebuild her breast mounds. The patient had a remarkably smooth recovery with minimal postoperative discomfort. She underwent two outpatient revision surgeries at 3.5 months and 9 months after the initial bilateral DIEP flap procedure. Revisions included mastopexy, liposculpture (using targeted liposuction and fat grafting to enhance breast shape), scar revision, and nipple mound reconstruction. The final result - fuller, better projecting breasts that are more proportionate to the rest of her body.
