BOTOX can make a big enhancement to static lines and wrinkles, which are created by making expressions from the muscles contracting on the upper face. The lines disappear as the face relaxes, but dynamic lines can still exist. BOTOX is a filtered strain of botulinum toxin (type A) that temporarily blocks the movements of the muscle. BOTOX is ideal for individuals who want to smooth the appearance of dynamic lines on their face nonsurgically. BOTOX is also used as a preventative treatment even if you are you are younger — keep in mind how often you tend to make facial expressions. It is a great nonsurgical approach if you have forehead lines or noticeable furrows between the brows. It's also a solution for lines that form around the eyes. If you have deeper lines, an injectable filler may be recommended. Furthermore, if you are older with severe wrinkles, you may opt for a facelift. BOTOX injections are done as an outpatient procedure directly in our office. If it is your first time to visit us about BOTOX, we commonly perform the injections during the same appointment as your consultation. You will be asked to make a few facial expressions involving the upper face, such as squinting, frowning, etc., which will allow us to determine where the injections are best placed. The skin will be cleansed and BOTOX will be injected through a blunt-tip microcannula needle, which allows for better results and less pain. Your injection will be followed by cold compressions applied to help reduce bruising, swelling, and discomfort. Patients may request a numbing cream or ice pack to make their treatment feel more comfortable, but this generally is not necessary. BOTOX injections typically take about 10 – 15 minutes, then patients can return to their normal activities with no required recovery period.

After the injection, patients can resume their usual activities, but strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least 24 hours. Patients are also asked to sleep upright for the first night and to not touch their face, which may accidentally spread the treatment to other areas. The treated areas of the face may be slightly red, bruised, or swollen for a few days after the injection, but most patients will not experience any long lasting or serious side effects from BOTOX treatments. In most patients, it often takes about 5 – 7 days before the full effects of BOTOX are visible. The results typically last 3 – 4 months.
